We get a lot of questions about cats. Here are a few tips for how to live with multiple cats while maintaining a peaceful, design forward house.

How To Live With 5 Cats

It’s no secret we are “cat people”. But anyone who has met the cats will tell you these are “not like any other cats” they’ve ever met. Often compared to dogs, I’m proud to say we’ve changed a few minds about cats for people. So what are we doing differently?

We’ve put together 7 tips for creating a peaceful, design-forward home with multiple cats. Just because you have pets, it DOES NOT mean you have to buy things from a pet store (plastic, colorful). It does however, mean you need to accept the responsibilities of vacuuming and lint rolling.

A few things I didn’t include in the article:

Buy a good vacuum. We love our Dyson cordless vacuum. I vacuum every single day (couch and pillows included) and it’s a must. We also have a Roomba, but to be honest, I haven’t used it in some time because we inevitably have things lying around (projects for work or renovation), and I don’t wait Craig (the name of our Roomba) to eat it.

Buy this specific scratching post. I mention buying a tall scratching post, but I can’t recommend this one enough. We’ve bought it 3-4 different times and made any of our friends with cats buy it too. The cats like to sit on top of it, but most importantly it’s tall enough to stretch their long muscles (the reason cats like to scratch the edges of couches). We have never ever had a problem with our cats scratching couches or chairs since we’ve had these.

Consider using Feliway. Every cat and house is different, but we’ve had great results with calming our cats during renovations, loud downtown noises, or just moments of cats being annoyed with each other thanks to this diffuser plugin. We have it on subscription delivery for replacing once a month.

We have two of this litterbox (Modkat). Don’t scoff at the price. This substantially reduces litter tracking, especially if you have long cats, or cats who are “kickers”. It’s also way more aesthetically pleasing. We have one XL Modkat because our kitties are getting over the 10 year old mark and we want to be able to switch it from top entry to front entry if jumping every gets difficult for them. We also have one standard Modkat (top entry only) .
