I'm in love with juicing but not juice detox. Ya dig? I can literally go on for hours about my thoughts on juice cleanses and detoxes (Oh wait...already did on Huffington Post Weddings) but long story short, adding a veggie juice to your weekly routine is an A plus idea. It's an easy way to mix produce you're not so fond of but that have amazing health benefits, get a power packed beauty nutrition shot (carrots and beets=major beauty boosters) and also clean out your fridge. Who doesn't love a multi-tasking recipe?

But wait...what if you don't own a juicer? How can one juice without said equipment? Problem solved. I am one juicer-less girl so I use a Vitamix (or high powered) blender and some cheese cloth. Done and done.

How to Juice in a Blender

Is it weird "to juice" has become a verb? Anyway, here's your easy peasy guide to making it happen!

/// Tools ///

  • High powered blender (eg. Vitamix)
  • Jar
  • Cheese Cloth
  • Rubber band
  • 2 t raw ginger (optional)

/// Directions ///

Add produce of choice (see recipe below for my beet carrot juice!) to blender with water. Blend on ultra high until there are no more chunks. Add additional water if you feel like the produce is 'stuck' or having a hard time moving. In a mason jar, place cheese cloth over top of the opening and create a small pouch downwards into the jar. Fasten around the mouth of the jar with a rubber band to hold it in place. Slowly pour the blended contents over the cheese cloth and into the jar. Using a spoon or rubber spatula, gently move blended contents around in a stirring motion within the cheese cloth. This will help move the liquid through while the solids stay above the cheese cloth barrier. As needed, you can remove some of the solids via spoon into the compost or trash. Be GENTLE or it will tear and then you'll just sit on the kitchen floor with a mess. Maybe cry a little.

Once you've moved all of the contents through the cheese cloth strainer remove the rubber band and cloth. Squeeze remaining liquid into the jar. Toss the cheese cloth and check out your juice! Store in the fridge.
